Joseph Orton was born in 1833 in Amington, Warwickshire, England, and was baptized in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in 1855. He emigrated to the United States, arriving in New York in 1856. He went to Utah in 1858 and settled in Saint George in 1861.
